Canon printers utilised at Loughborough University to expand their offerings

The Challenge

To increase production capabilities as efficiently as possible, meeting the demand for an expanding range of applications, keeping the work in-house and reducing waste by ensuring consistent quality across all presses and print runs.

The Technology

Loughborough University transformed its production capabilities with investments in a Canon imagePRESS V1350, two imagePRESS V1000 presses, an Arizona 135 GT flatbed printer and a Colorado roll-to-roll UVgel printer.

The Impact

Integrated with their web-to-print solution, ePS MarketDirect StoreFront, the new printers have allowed Loughborough University to expand their offerings, provide more services, and bring previously outsourced jobs in-house.

The Client

The brand, production print and logistics services offered at Loughborough University play a central role in supporting the campus and local community, offering an array of printing services for academic studies, teaching, social activities, marketing and university promotion.

I knew we needed at least three colour digital presses and to invest in wide format because we were outsourcing so much – or not doing the work at all – that the printed outputs that the university actually needed weren’t being fulfilled. I was open to anything that would make us more efficient and more effective.”

The Technology

Loughborough University invested in an imagePRESS V1350 and two imagePRESS V1000 printers. The V1350 produces applications, such as graduate programmes and course brochures, for which accurate colour reproduction is the key requirement. One V1000 continuously produces applications such as exam booklets, while the other, equipped with a banner-sheet module and punch unit, produces a wider specification of products, such as booklets and postcards. Increasing its wide format capability, the university also invested in an Arizona 135 GT flatbed printer and a Colorado UVgel roll-to-roll printer. Trust, confidence, and the strong existing relationship with the canon team were key factors in helping to define and deliver the optimal solution.

Why Canon

imagePRESS V series

A range of reliable, cut-sheet digital colour presses that deliver consistent high quality and productivity with broad application flexibility.

Arizona large format flatbed printers

The Arizona series of flatbed printers gives customers the ability to print graphics on signs, displays, and rigid substrates.

Colorado UVgel roll-to-roll printer

Loughborough University chose the Colorado printer for its versatility and quality, enabling them to produce items like floor, window, and wall vinyl in-house instead of outsourcing. This improved efficiency, reduced costs, and allowed the university to better meet the needs of its staff, students, and community while expanding their service offerings.

The Impact

Integrated with Loughborough University’s web-to-print solution, ePS MarketDirect StoreFront, the new printers allowed the university to expand its applications mix and bring more work inhouse. They also offered the university greater flexibility, as the previous sliding pricing scale often led customers to over-order to achieve lower unit costs. With their improved short-run print capability, the print team was able to encourage university departments to place more frequent orders of smaller volumes, resulting in the reduction of wasted material and energy usage.

The future for Print, Post and Logistics at Loughborough University feels the brightest it’s felt for quite a while. For us, having this Canon print technology, setting ourselves up in the way we have and having our financial model and team structure organised as we do makes our future much stronger.”
