Canon reveals striking entries from its Between the Lines student competition for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games

United Kingdom, 1ˢᵗ August 2022 – Canon is unveiling some of the evocative entries submitted to its Between the Lines student photography competition which took place in the run up to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Aspiring amateur photographers entered the competition, which was coordinated as part of Canon’s role as Official Imaging Supporter of the Games, to be in with the chance of experiencing professional sports photography at one of the world’s best-known sporting events.

Canon is pleased to showcase some of the striking entries from its Between the Lines competition, capturing the values of the Commonwealth Games.

Entries showcased the three core values of the Commonwealth Games: humanity conveying benevolence, togetherness or human nature: destiny conveying fate, aspiration or ambition; and equality conveying collective spirit, fairness, non-discrimination, or inclusion. Images were judged by Neale Conroy, Canon UK & Ireland Marketing Director and Molly Darlington, Professional Sports Photographer and Canon Ambassador, alongside Editorial and Commercial Photographer Paul Cunningham.

The three winning images all conveyed how capturing emotion is an integral part to sharing messages in photography. From a Muay Thai fight to friends supporting each other day-to-day, the selected winners demonstrated brilliant composition and the ability to generate big impact.

“The level of skill, both in artistic ability and technical proficiency was very high,” said Neale Conroy, Canon UK & Ireland Marketing Director. “We were very excited to see how the photographers would interpret the briefs and were not disappointed - with these amateur photographers really pushing their technical ability. There was a real variety to the submissions, demonstrating how each photographer saw the values, with a mixture of sports related images and students applying the themes to their everyday lives.”

The three winning photographers will be taken trackside with Editorial and Commercial Photographer Paul Cunningham to learn top tips as well as editing expertise.
