At Canon, we created the first toner printer cartridge recycling programme in the world. Our recycling programmes mean that from inception to use to recycling and reuse, no parts of the cartridge will end up in landfill. We encourage all of our customers to join us and become part of our sustainability journey. What is the Canon Cartridge Recycling Programme?

The Canon Cartridge Recycling Programmes let you return your used ink or toner to Canon for free. Your used cartridges will either be reused or recycled, either as a component in a new cartridge, a base material in other industries or as a substitute for fossil fuels. This helps Canon commit to a no landfill policy.

Between 1990 and 2022 we have collected, reused and recycled 454,000 tons of laser toner cartridge from 24 countries achieving a cumulative reduction in the use of new resources linked to the manufacture of new laser toner cartridges by approximately 322,000 tons. We have also collected and recycled over 2731 tonnes of inkjet cartridges from 30 countries since 2006. How to recycle printer cartridges with Canon?

Recycling ink cartridges or toner cartridges is easy. Simply follow the below steps:

How to recycle Ink Cartridges

1) If you haven’t received a returns envelope with your order, you can print the freepost label available on our website and stick it on your parcel
2) Place your used acceptable Genuine Canon Ink cartridges inside the parcel (we accept over 276 Canon inks)
3) Place the parcel in the post

It’s that easy. Our only ask - it isn’t a requirement – is that you try to return at least five ink cartridges at a time. This helps us to reduce the impact of the emissions that it takes to transport your ink cartridges.

How to recycle Toner Cartridges

To join our toner cartridge recycling programme, please follow the below steps:

1) Single cartridge:

a. Please fill in the toner form to request a freepost label
b. Place the freepost label on the parcel
c. Place the parcel in the post

2) Bulk toner cartridges:

a. If you wish to return more than 10 Genuine Canon cartridges, you can request up to two return boxes which will be delivered to your office or home
b. Follow the instructions on our website and request collection of boxes
c. We will pick these toners up for recycling

If the programmes or your ink and toner are not applicable in your region, please follow local guidelines and use local recycling infrastructure.

Which cartridges can I use?

We will only accept Genuine Canon Ink or Toner Cartridges in our printer cartridge recycling programme. These cartridges must be single-use and cannot be a large-format ink or toner cartridges. We accept both ink and toner cartridges. It would be helpful if you could return at least five ink cartridges at a time as this reduces emissions during transport, however this isn’t compulsory.

How does Canon recycle your used cartridges?

When you return your ink or toner cartridge, the cartridges are unpacked and mechanically crushed into small pieces. The crushed elements of plastics and metals are separated, before being recycled. Each element of every returned cartridge is reused or recycled. This could either be as a component in a new cartridge, as a base material in other industries or even as a substitute for fossil fuels. Not a single part of the cartridge will be sent to landfill during the ink toner recycling process.
